Confused about your career? Read this.
Confusion is often the experience that precedes clarity, and clarity is what all of us seek in matters of great importance. Your career is one such aspect of your life where you want clarity. Instead, with the many industries, roles and opportunities, along with the tedium of the job search process, confusion is what prevails.
Here’s what you should do if you’re confused about your career.
1. Make every opportunity count
While you’re trying to figure out where you’d like to build your career, make sure that every job you take up adds value to your resume. Ensure that you acquire at least one useful skill with every job, so that your CV boasts of a bunch of relevant and up-to-date skills and experiences.
2. Embrace variety
Before you set your eyes on the goal, it is important that you have had a taste of many kinds of roles and opportunities out there. Before you take your career pick, make sure that you experiment with variety. Not only will this expose you to the many different kinds of roles and careers out there, it will also enable you to become aware of the many possibilities and the things that you can do with your career. After all, there are infinite ways of charting out your career path.
3. Plan the next step
As you perform a variety of roles and acquire a set of skills, you will come closer to discovering the areas of a) your interest and b) your competence. Once you have a fair idea of the two, you should look for jobs that match your skills and preferences. The best way to move ahead in your career path is to take it one step at a time.
4. Take the risks that matter
It is important to take risks. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should be reckless and take up or quit jobs as per your whims and fancies. But if something feels like it might be worth your while, go ahead and give it a shot. This could be a new company, a new kind of role, or anything else previously unknown. You may not know where it will lead, but remember that it is the experience that counts. Ultimately, the key to success is in taking risks. If you don’t take the plunge, you’ll never know what you’re missing out on.
