How to Get Hired by Google
It’s hard to come by a person whose list of dream jobs doesn’t include one at Google. As if it weren’t enough that Google is one of the world’s leading tech companies, Google’s iconic work culture remains unparalleled. In 2015, Fortune magazine ranked Google—for the 6th time successively—as the no.1 place of work. It is no surprise, then, that Google receives nearly two million job applications every year. The wide range of supreme perks (hammock, gymnasium, free meals, massages—the list is long) and employment benefits are just some of the reasons why a job at Google is much coveted.
Google’s global presence makes it easy for jobseekers around the world to aspire for this job opportunity without necessarily having to relocate. But here’s what may seem like a catch. Because of the volume of applications, the competition is exceedingly high. So, how do you get hired by Google? Let’s answer this very important question with the following observations.
1. There’s more than one kind of role at Google: Google is a tech company—and not everyone is a techie. If you’re not a tech geek, try looking at the other kinds of roles at Google. From engineering to finance and real estate to workplace services, Google hires for a variety of roles that require different kinds of backgrounds and areas of expertise.
2. You don’t need a top-notch University degree: It is commonly believed (and was perhaps true until more recently) that leading companies such as Google, Facebook and Goldman Sachs recruit their employees only from among the leading Universities globally. The Ivy League institutions and other leading business schools were essentially the only academic institutions that would see their graduates find jobs with these companies. However, Google and Goldman Sachs are known to have changed the way they hire—they look for talent and skills rather than degrees.
3. You don’t need traditional managerial or leadership skills: A leadership role at Google is anything but about power and hierarchy. Being a leader at Google isn’t as much about controlling the fate of the people on your team. It’s more about believing that everyone who works with you has worthy contributions to make, and therefore, about being open to their ideas and encouraging the vision. It’s more about enabling collaborative teamwork than about personal success.
4. The skills you will need to get hired by Google?
Laszlo Bock, the head of people operations at Google—the man in-charge of the hiring at the company—lists out four things in order of importance that he looks for in potential employees:
-“General cognitive ability… the ability to absorb information.”
– “Emergent leadership. The idea there being that when you see a problem, you step in and try to address it. Then you step out when you’re no longer needed. That willingness to give up power is really important.”
-“Googleyness”, which is to be a “cultural fit”, which further means that “you just have to be somebody who, when the facts show you’re wrong, can say that.”
-“Expertise in the job we’re gonna hire you for.”
The ability to think critically and laterally, and the perseverance to stick it out through challenging situations are given more weightage than specific skills. So, if working at Google is an item on your life’s checklist, do give it a shot. Because Google focuses on hiring you for your general abilities more than your specific skills (which you can acquire on the job), everyone has a chance. Gain the requisite experience through internships and the like, and keep your skills updated by being open to learning all the time.
