3 Sure Tips For Staying Calm Before An Interview
We all know how it feels to be nervous before an interview. Even before we’ve gained anything we start counting what we can lose. Which is why it is important to learn to stay calm before an interview, otherwise we increase the chances of failure by performing with nervousness.
To help you do your best, here are 3 tips for staying calm before an interview.
1. Practice focused breathing (pranayam)
Pranayam, or focused breathing, is a great stress reliever. By simply taking slow and deep breaths you can gain a lot of peace and mental balance, and the more you do it the more benefits you get.
Along with providing your body with more oxygen, you are also slowly clearing away your worries by just focusing on your breathing in and breathing out.
Try it for just 5 minutes to see the benefits. Set a timer for 5 minutes, in a quiet and dark room, and begin your breathing. Fill your lungs, inflate your stomach, and then slowly squeeze the air out. Count your breaths instead of counting the time in your head.
You can do this in any comfortable posture, sitting cross-legged, on a chair with a straight back, or lying down on a flat surface. Try to do it at least twice a day, morning and evening, and definitely just before your interview (you can do it while waiting for your turn).
2. Rehearse some common questions
A big reason for our nervousness before an interview is that we don’t know what we will be asked. So, like a school/college exam we are afraid of failing.
But, in school we spent months before an exam preparing for easy and tough questions, as well as identifying common questions that had a high chance of appearing. Then that is what you should do before an interview as well.
For 2-3 days before the interview have a mock interview with yourself, or with the help of a friend. Introduce yourself, talk about your achievements, and why you should be hired. And remember to do it like a conversation (where the next question comes from the last answer) and not like an exam (where the questions are all pre-decided with no change).
This preparation will not only help boost your confidence, but you will actually be better prepared than others because not many people put this effort into preparing in advance.
3. Remind yourself there are other jobs
At the end of the day, you can have good and bad days, so you must be able to accept small failures.
If the interview doesn’t go well, ask yourself why. Was it because of the interviewer (he/she was rude, impatient, or bored), or yourself (you didn’t answer well, had poor body language, arrived late)?
If it’s because of the interviewer then forget it, you can’t be blamed and you shouldn’t work for someone who behaves badly.
If it is some problem in yourself, then take this as an opportunity to improve for next time. Remember, one of the signs of success is how we deal with failure. So tell yourself that even if you don’t get the job, you will not be empty-handed, so drop the extra pressure.
Get better, and come back stronger next time.
