Women Transporters : Unconventional career options

Women in today’s world are not only doing wonderful in corporate work place but also coming forward in a big way to opt for unconventional career options

28 year old Preethi was the woman behind the wheels when Chennai’s first metro rolled out of Alandur station on 29th June, 2015. Before that, in March 2011, 3 young women were selected to drive Jaipur Metro. We salute Preethi and many other women who have ventured into unconventional jobs, thereby opening new avenues for many others.

Let’s take a look at some of the women pioneers in the ‘transportation’ business.

First Woman Commercial Pilot

Prem  Mathur, flew a Deccan Airways plane in 1948. Today there are many successful women pilots across all airlines. But even more inspiring is the story of Sarla Thakral, who was the first Indian lady to get a pilot’s license and flew a Gypsy Moth in 1936, at the age of 21. She flew the aircraft in a saree. Married at 16, she went on to pave the way for many others such as Prem Mathur.

First Woman Merchant Navy Commander

Radhika Menon commanded Suvarna Swarajya in 2013.

Indian Railways

Surekha Shankar Yadav became the 1st engine driver in Indian Railways in 1998.

DTC bus

On April 18, 2015, 30 year old Saritha became the first woman driver of a DTC bus.

First Woman IAF pilot

This honor goes to Harita Kaur Deol who flew solo an IAF aircraft on September 2, 1994.

First Woman to fly Trans-Atlantic

Amelia Earhart, at the age of 34, flew solo across the Atlantic Ocean on the morning of May 20, 1932.

First Woman taxi driver in Afghanistan

Sara Bahayi is Afghanistan’s first female taxi driver. She has shown tremendous courage to choose this unconventional career option and in the country where women have struggled to even enjoy basic human rights.

There are numerous examples cited in history of women who have adopted unconventional vocations and rolled the wheels of revolution. Women are no longer restricting themselves by choosing conventional careers.
